Hi Church!
Have you ever got something in your eye that did not want to come out? It can go from being down right annoying (tears) to painful (painful). There have been times that I felt like my eyes were a magnet for whatever. I can’t count the number of times that has happened to me – sawdust, hayseed, dirt, metal filings, hot ember, bugs, cow manure… you name it, I have had it in my eyes. For the longest time, I never wore eye protection. Growing up and working on the family farm, eye protection was not readily available or prioritized and a few times I landed in the ER to have something removed. But thankfully, I still have good eyesight in both of my eyes, and I have learned to wear eye protection. Most of the time.
When Jesus said, “why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye” he grabbed people’s attention! Literally, it means why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye when you have a phone pole sticking out of your eye! Jesus knew how to power pack truth with a punch that could not be forgotten.
In our series of top ten, we have made it to the New Testament. This week we look at the most famous sermon ever given. It is called the sermon on the mount! It is LOADED WITH NUGGETS OF TRUTH that are invaluable. It is like what we call monster cookies – which contain chocolate chips, m&m’s, reeses pieces, nuts, peanut butter, and oatmeal. They are loaded with goodness! That is the sermon on the mount! A monster sermon spoken from the mount.
